Tonight is the first time in so long I can’t remember that someone has looked me in the eye and with total sincerity declaimed how tolerant they’ve been for treating me like a real human and ignoring the fact that I’m gay. That they only learned I was gay from a gossipy server who transferred from another store and had a grudge against me makes it all the more amazing that they think I should be appreciative of their upstanding, politically correct behavior.
So… Starting on Friday the 13th, I am acting General Manager of Denny’s #7210 in SouthEast San Antonio. If I am able to perform for 60 days to the district managers expectations, then the position, if not the store, becomes mine.
Over a week ago we lost the air conditioner in the back of the restaurant. That same afternoon the compressors for the air conditioner in the front dining both blew out. It was about 85°F so while everyone was uncomfortable, it was manageable. This week and this memorial day weekend however, were not pleasant. Temperatures have held steady all week long in the upper 90’s making the kitchen a swealtering 100°+ and the dining rooms average in the mid to upper 80’s.
Add the no shows and quiters amongst the crew and the last couple weeks have been very challenging. I am at the point where I dread going into work. When I pull into the parking lot, I shut off my engine and sit there thinking, “what has happened today that’s going to make me work harder and longer than I should have to?”
now mind, i’m not trying to say that as a manager I shouldn’t have to work or that I should have a nice, easy, short work-day every single day I go in…. But this got ridiculus a week ago.
Just talked to one of the other cooks who was in eating dinner and he said that one of the other day shift cookds is planning on quitting. And I think I know who it is.
